Half Moon by Blind Pilot
I'm a firm believer that music is all around us, if we are listening. This song found me yesterday as I was driving and I found it to be fitting for an introspective mood. Good for solo road trips.
I'm not familiar with the Portland based band, but I can appreciate their indie style and down to earth lyrics. Blind Pilot is also apparently on tour. Check them out if you have the chance.
Mad by Anthony Hamilton
One word: hamonica.
Ok, this guy sings with soul and the song has a great hook too, but you don't hear a harmonica everyday. I wouldn't consider myself a big R&B listener, and last.fm describes his style as "neo-soul", whatever that means. I think he sounds like indie- he doesn't sound like anyone else, it's fresh.
2 Hearts by Digitalism
This seems like a fun little song for a Thursday. Should be added to your going out music collection. Fun beat, kinda catchy. I found it on an old SPIN playlist. The group, Digitalism, is German based. I quite admire the name of their album: I love you, dude. The variety of ways guys use the word dude is something to marvel. It seems the group has picked up on that tidbit of American male culture. I'm impressed. Good song too.
Young the Giant at the Ogden
Great show at the Ogden last night. The band is touring, but they also played some new stuff.
They also invested in some very pretty lights since the last time I saw them live. I approve.
Lights by Ellie Goulding
I have to again thank my favorite radio station, 93.3 for helping me discover this song. I Shazamed it twice, which says to me, it wasn't a fluke, I really do like the song. It's a great song for going out on a Friday night. My opinion: Ellie Goulding is an up-and-comer. The UK star is only 25. Keep an eye out!
Let the Drummer Kick by Citizen Cope
Thursday was a sad day to be at Keystone. The ski patroller community lost one of their own to an avalance in the backcountry near Wolf Creek. I found myself accompanying a friend to a wake of sorts at the Snake River Inn. I'm told this song, Let the Drummer kick was one of fallen skier's favorite tunes. This one's for Andre:
Young the Giant - Apartment (Open Spaces Session)
Young the Giant is playing in Denver this Saturday. The show sold out months ago- not at all surprising for a band with two big hits and a great album. I saw them play last fall and fell in love with the band. The lead singer, Sameer Gadhia, has a voice that makes me melt. Seriously, it's like silk. Oh yeah, and he's a total dish, sexy stubble and all.
The band released some music videos recorded in the open. Very daring, I approve. This version of Apartment is subtly wonderful. I hope they have big mops at the Ogden for all the drool the ladies will leave behind, this lady included!
Ziggly Marley - Love Is My Religion (Acoustic)
Every once in a while, I find myself at a place and time with a song that strikes me so profoundly, it becomes something else - an experience. Many of us have songs that remind us of a certain time and place, but those moments are rare, at least in my history. I added one last night.
I went to my local yoga studio, looking for some peace and shall we say, emotional clarity. I expected a good workout and a few moments of peace in final shivasana. (Apologies to the non-yoga practicioners.) What I got instead was a spontaneous group sing of Ziggy Marley's "Love Is My Reigion." My yoga classmates were singing along with the song on the overhead while continuing their practices. It was very unexpected.
In the two years I've been practicing, the only other collective sounds I've heard in a yoga class are Ohms and lions' breathes. But the nature of the lyrics were important, and I realized (as I have come to with the collective Ohms as well) that a good yoga class is a very emotionally supportive place. It was just what I needed at the time and place I needed it.
So in the spirit of Valentine's Day (which I'm still not sure I understand the connection between love and some really old martyrs, but hey, how can a celebration of love be a bad thing) I give you, Ziggy Marley's Love Is My Religion, the acoustic version, as I heard it last night. Perhaps it will find new meaning with you too.
Ten-Twenty-Ten by Generationals
I missed blogging about music. It's not that I stopped finding great new songs either. The proof is in this catchy number by a band that is new to me, Generationals. I have to thank a Spotify user for this find. Love it. The album is new this year and the band is on tour (just missed them in Denver.)
Million Years by Alexander (Congrats to Kim and Brandon)
My good friends Kim and Brandon were married up in Vail this weekend. It was a lovely ceremony and truly well-matched couple. They chose wonderful music for the ceremony, but this is the soundtrack playing in my mind (without the weird breathing or the images from the really weird video):
Congrats Brandon and Kim!
